Bone China by Laura Purcell - A Review

A well deserved 5 star rating

Bone China tells the story of a lady's maid on the run from her past, but is her new employment the escape she had imagined?

The main character, Hester Why, is a conflicted individual, deeply troubled and consumed by guilt. Her desire to help can sometimes become overwhelming, which, through snippets of the characters thoughts, seem to come from her early life. She only desires to feel useful, and needed. She craves attention and love. When she is employed as nurse to Miss Pinecroft at Morvoren House on the Cornish coast, she has chosen somewhere as far away from her past as possible.

The second story which is told, is the story of Louise Pinecroft. A young woman, who's life has been turned upside down with the death of her mother and siblings to consumption. Her father, Dr Pinecroft moves them both to Morvoren House, determined to find a cure for the disease which deprived him of his family.

The way that the stories collide, with strange characters and superstitions will leave you racing through the pages to the climax.

Laura Purcell is able to create vivid imagery with her use of descriptive writing, meaning that you feel fully immersed into the story from the get-go but the world which the author creates is dark and cold. The story offers little in the way of hope. It is a bleak setting, yet the story keeps you coming back for more. The excellent writing has you wondering what is real - and what is not, throughout. The mystery and suspense continues throughout the book and that's what draws you in. Will you get the answers you want? You'll have to read for yourself and find out!
